Six ways to finally quit porn for good

One of the major issues impacting today’s youth and many adults is addiction to pornography. What was once a hidden sin that required much effort to fall into has now become an epidemic following the onset of Mobile devices that are capable of streaming such content from the privacy of one’s palm. We have compiled some tips to help those who are struggling with this problem finally quit porn for good.

  • Lower your gaze

Prevention is better than treatment. Lower your gaze from the opposite gender, especially if they are attractive. This includes TV shows, movies and any imagery that is arousing.

Allah states in the Quran:

“Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their private parts; that will make for greater purity for them. Indeed Allah is well acquainted with all that they do.”

Quran 24:30

  • Avoid being alone

Always try to keep yourself busy in communal activities. Attend the Mosque, social gatherings and family outings to avoid being alone and inhibit evil thoughts. Pick up a new hobby to keep you pre-occupied if it helps.

  • Limit Access to Internet

Ensure that household computers are in public rooms and remove all mobile devices from your bedroom at night. Only use the Internet when necessary and avoid browsing aimlessly online.

  • Fast more often

The Prophet taught us that fasting is a “shield”, particularly for the one who cannot marry. It will not only inhibit one’s sexual desire but also earn many good rewards.

The Prophet advised the youth that whoso can afford to get married should do it. Marriage provides the ultimate protection from evil desire and is a noble Sunnah to protect one’s chastity.

The Prophet Muhammad says in the authentic narration:

“Oh young men, whoever among you can afford to get married, let him do so, and whoever cannot afford, let him fast, for that will be a shield for him”.

  • Seek Allah’s help

If you are truly sincere in your intention to give up this bad habit, seek Allah’s help and He will assist you out of this.

وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُۥٓ ۚ

“And whoso relies upon Allah, He will suffice him”.
